The bags were unpacked and the cabins were claimed. Ahead lay 20 nights to the Canary Islands.
Then, at about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Mein Schiff 3 eased away from the cruise quay in Bremerhaven, Germany, with tugs alongside. A gust caught her, and she was pushed sideways into two moored container ships.
The cruise had travelled about as far as the next quay. By Monday lunchtime it was cancelled, the captain was under investigation, and police were estimating the damage in the millions of euros.
Nobody was hurt. That matters most, and it’s why the rest can be told with a straight face.

One Gust, Three Damaged Ships
Bremen police described the sequence in a Monday-morning release. The ship left the cruise terminal with tug assistance, bound for the Canaries. A gust then drove her onto two container ships lying at the Stromkaje, the long container quay just up the river Weser.

Send me the free kit →Police listed the damage like this:
- The larger container ship: its port side torn open over several metres, and its container guides bent. Radio Bremen and Kreiszeitung name her as MSC Victorine and put the tear at about 10 metres.
- The smaller container ship: slight damage.
- Mein Schiff 3: significant damage to her lifeboats, the cranes that lower them, and her outer hull.
All of it was above the waterline, and no ship took on water. The port’s ship-safety office then barred all three from leaving.
There were 2,428 guests and 922 crew aboard, according to figures from TUI Cruises reported by ZDF and dpa. The ship holds 2,506, so she was almost full.

TUI called the cancellation “the only responsible decision.” Its update for guests says it is still assessing “whether, and to what extent, subsequent cruises are affected.”

Why Couldn’t the Tugs Hold Her?
Five tugs were helping, police told Radio Bremen. So how does a ship get away from five tugs?
Mein Schiff 3 is 293 metres long, and above the waterline she’s mostly balcony. That whole flank works as a sail. As the engineering site ingenieur.de explains, wind force rises roughly with the square of wind speed, so a gust at double the speed pushes about four times as hard. We covered the same physics when ships kept snapping their mooring lines.
A tug’s rated pull also depends on its angle, and it has to build faster than the gust. Once a ship this heavy starts sliding, it keeps going even after the drift slows. With container ships moored downwind, there wasn’t much room to stop.
How windy was it? Reports differ. Kreiszeitung says the weather service warned of gusts up to 85 km/h. news-on-tour says Bremerhaven recorded force 9 gusts (75 to 88 km/h), and weather.com says up to 59 mph (about 95 km/h). Yet the port authority told t-online no port wind warning was in force.
Bremerhaven harbour master Stephan Berger told Radio Bremen the port has no general ban on sailing in high wind. The captain decides, “because he knows what his ship can and what his ship cannot do.” A harbour pilot was aboard to advise, but German pilotage law keeps the captain responsible for handling the ship, as t-online explains. Police are now checking whether he met his duty of care, and they haven’t said what the suspected breach is. Nothing has been proven. A report from Germany’s federal maritime accident investigators is expected in about a year, according to t-online.

German Guests Get Cash. Would You?
According to dpa, as reported by Radio Bremen, guests get the full fare back and can travel home by train. A German travel agency also reports 10% off a new booking made by December 31, 2026. TUI’s own public page doesn’t mention either, so check your own cancellation letter.
That generosity is largely the law. TUI Cruises’ booking terms say each Mein Schiff cruise is an EU package holiday, with TUI taking “full responsibility” for delivering it. Here’s what that buys you compared with a typical US ticket contract (German quotes are our translation):
| If the line cancels… | German package law (BGB 651h, 651n) | Carnival ticket contract, clause 8(c) |
|---|---|---|
| Your fare | If the organiser withdraws, it “loses its claim to the agreed travel price” | For “a mechanical failure of the Vessel”: the “Total Cruise Price, or a proportional share thereof as determined by Carnival” |
| How fast | “Without undue delay, and in any case within 14 days” | No deadline in the clause |
| Any other cause | The same refund rule applies | “A Future Cruise Credit or an Onboard Credit,” not cash |
| Extra compensation | Damages, plus “appropriate compensation” for “uselessly spent holiday time,” unless the cause was “unavoidable, extraordinary circumstances” | Mechanical failure: transport home and any lodging needed. Anything else: “no further liability for damages or compensation of any kind” |
Under German law, a cause only counts as “unavoidable” if its consequences “could not have been avoided even if all reasonable precautions had been taken.” That’s close to the question police are asking about the decision to sail. We aren’t predicting the answer, but any compensation for the lost holiday, on top of the refund, may turn on it.

If Your Cruise Ends at the Pier
- Know which rulebook you bought. A cruise sold as an EU package comes with refund deadlines that the line can’t contract out of. A US ticket contract is mostly the line’s own terms. Find the cancellation clause before you sail.
- Watch the wording of the reason. Under Carnival’s contract, “mechanical failure” gets you money back, and any other reason gets you credit. If you’re offered credit, ask in writing what cause the line is relying on.
- Keep every receipt. You can only claim what you can prove.
- Read your insurance for “trip interruption”. It can cover the costs a cruise line won’t. Our cruise insurance guide explains what to look for.
Mein Schiff 3 is waiting for a shipyard, MSC Victorine for a patch, and 2,428 people went home without a Canary Islands tan. Nobody was injured, and that’s still the headline. We’ll update this story as it develops.
