Is Room Service Free on a Cruise? Breakfast Usually Is. Your 2 A.M. Snack Usually Isn’t

Breakfast is usually free; the rest often carries a fee. We checked ten cruise lines' room service rules, and how to order in without paying one.

How we work: facts are checked against original sources and linked, cruise prices are verified on the cruise line’s own website the day we publish, and we earn no commissions. Spotted a mistake? Tell us and we will correct it.

It’s 2 a.m., the casino was a mistake, and you want a Philly cheesesteak. On a Royal Caribbean ship you can have one: its room service FAQ says the kitchen delivers “any time of the day or night,” and the cheesesteak is on the menu. Your bill gets a $7.95 charge for that, plus an 18% gratuity, before you’ve taken a bite.

On October 23, 2026 we read the room service rules of ten cruise lines, using their own FAQs, menus and fare pages wherever they publish them. Here’s what’s free, what isn’t, and how to eat in your cabin without paying a delivery fee.

Is Room Service Free on a Cruise?

Breakfast usually is. Everything else usually isn’t. On Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess and Celebrity, a continental breakfast is free, while orders at other times carry a delivery fee, a price per item, or both. Norwegian and MSC charge something even at breakfast. Holland America, Disney and Viking still include most room service in the fare, and so do most luxury lines.

What Ten Cruise Lines Charge for Room Service

Royal CaribbeanContinental breakfast: “coffee, tea, toast and cereal”$7.95 per order, plus an automatic 18% gratuityGrand Suite and above, says The Points Guy

NorwegianThe menu items themselves“Up to $9.95” per order, and $4.95 on every breakfast orderThe Haven and suites

CelebrityOnly the continental breakfast section of the menu$9.95 per order, plus an automatic 18% gratuityThe Retreat suites and Zenith members, in an older entry on the same FAQ
MSCSome menu items$4.99 delivery per order in the basic Bella fare, plus item pricesFantastica and Aurea get free delivery; Yacht Club pays nothing
Holland AmericaDelivery and most of the menu, 24 hours“Select items” cost extra, plus a 20% service chargeEveryone gets free delivery
DisneyMost of the menu, 24 hoursSnacks, soda, specialty coffee and alcoholEveryone (but see Disney Adventure below)
Virgin VoyagesMost food on the ShipEats menu$10 delivery, waived on orders of $10 or moreRockStar Quarters
Viking (ocean)All of it: “24-hour room service”Nothing for deliveryEveryone
Checked October 23, 2026, from Royal Caribbean’s inclusions guide and FAQ, Carnival’s room service page, Norwegian’s FAQ, Princess’s FAQ, Celebrity’s FAQ, Holland America’s in-room dining page, Virgin’s dining FAQ and Viking’s inclusions page. MSC’s own pages wouldn’t load for us, so its row comes from The Points Guy and Cruise Gear. Disney’s comes from The Points Guy and Touring Plans. Fees are in US dollars and can change without notice.

Two cautions. Celebrity’s FAQ page carries two versions of its answer: the newer sets $9.95 and 18% (The Points Guy’s 2024 guide agrees), while the older says 20% and lists the suite perk. And The Points Guy described Princess’s app fee and $5 delivery fee as stacking, while Princess’s FAQ lists them as alternatives.

What Does the Free Breakfast Actually Include?

Enough to start a day, not enough to impress anyone. Carnival’s room service menu (PDF) lists the 6 to 10 a.m. free selection: bananas and melon, six cereals from Froot Loops to Cheerios, Danish, muffins, croissants, bagels, toast (gluten-free included), yogurt, juices, milk, tea, hot chocolate and coffee. The breakfast sandwiches underneath carry a price, with the note “A service charge will automatically be added to your order.” The Points Guy put those sandwiches at $5 to $6.

Royal Caribbean’s free breakfast is the same idea: “coffee, tea, toast and cereal,” says its inclusions guide. Anything off the full menu costs $7.95 plus tax and fees per order. Celebrity is stricter on paper: “The ONLY items that will remain complimentary are those under the continental breakfast section of the menu.”

Norwegian works the other way round. Its FAQ says “Individual items on the menu remain available on a complimentary basis,” but every order pays a fee, and breakfast has its own: “a $4.95 Room Service Breakfast fee is fleetwide for all breakfast room service orders.” So on Norwegian, the food is free but the delivery never is, unless you’re in a suite.

Princess keeps “complimentary traditional stateroom breakfast room service using the classic door hanger menu,” as Travel Market Report reported when the $5 fee arrived in August 2023. Fill in the card and hang it on your door. Phoning the same order in is what triggers the fee.

Which Cruise Lines Still Include Room Service?

Holland America delivers around the clock with no delivery fee. Its in-room dining page says “Select items are available for an additional charge,” and its crew incentive page adds a 20% service charge to “à la carte menu items.” The Points Guy’s examples were lobster Benedict at $12.50 and steak and eggs at $15.

Disney includes “complimentary 24-hour room service” with every fare, according to The Points Guy, and Touring Plans’ Disney room service FAQ agrees. Both list the same extras: packaged snacks, canned soda, bottled water, specialty coffee and alcohol. Touring Plans gives a Coke as $2.

The exception may be Disney Adventure, the line’s largest ship and the only one built for Asian sailings. In late May 2026, Cruise Hive, Cruise Mummy and Nautical Flock all reported a $5 charge plus an automatic 18% gratuity on room service from the week of June 1, with breakfast staying free. All three say Disney hadn’t confirmed it, and we found no confirmation either. Cruise Hive says no other Disney ship is known to be getting the fee.

Viking lists “24-hour room service” among the things its ocean fares include. The Points Guy’s guide says the same, and adds that Viking’s river ships don’t offer room service. It also lists room service as included on Azamara, Cunard, Oceania, Regent, Seabourn, Silversea and Windstar.

What One Order a Day Costs Over a Week

Say you order one lunch or late-night snack in your cabin every day of a seven-night cruise. Delivery fees alone, before food prices, tax and gratuities, add up like this:

  • Celebrity: 7 × $9.95 = $69.65, plus the 18% gratuity on each check.
  • Norwegian: up to 7 × $9.95 = $69.65. Add breakfast in bed every morning and it’s another 7 × $4.95 = $34.65.
  • Royal Caribbean: 7 × $7.95 = $55.65, plus tax, fees and the 18% gratuity.
  • Princess (by phone): 7 × $5 = $35.
  • Virgin Voyages: between $0 and $70. Every order under $10 pays the $10 fee, and every order of $10 or more pays none.
  • Holland America, Disney (except Adventure) and Viking: $0 in delivery fees.

Not ruinous, but real money for food the buffet would give you free.

How to Get Room Service Without the Fee

  • Order breakfast, and order it the old-fashioned way. The continental breakfast is the free order on almost every line. On Princess, use the door-hanger card, not the phone. On Virgin, order through the cabin tablet by 2 a.m. for a 5 to 11 a.m. drop-off, says its dining FAQ.
  • On Virgin, order $10 or more at a time. The fee “is waived if you order items totalling $10 or more.” VV Insider, a fan guide, gives the same rule. A paid coffee or cocktail added to an order you’d have bought anyway can cover it.
  • Batch your orders. Every fee in the table is per order, not per person. Celebrity’s FAQ calls its fee “a fixed cost,” the same for one dish as for several.
  • Count what your package or cabin already waives. Princess Plus and Premier, Norwegian’s Haven and suites, Virgin’s RockStar Quarters and MSC’s Fantastica and Aurea fares all cut or remove the fee.
  • Or carry a plate back from the buffet. It’s the same kitchen and it’s free. Our guide to bringing snacks aboard covers what you can keep in the cabin.

Quick Answers

Do you tip for room service on a cruise?

On Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, an 18% gratuity is added to the check automatically. Norwegian adds 20% to paid drinks and special-occasion items. Where nothing is added, such as on Disney, Touring Plans calls a tip optional and suggests $1 per item or $2 to $3 per person. The Points Guy suggests carrying small bills.

Can you get room service on the last morning of a cruise?

Often not. Celebrity’s breakfast menu runs “each day of the cruise except disembarkation day,” Virgin says ShipEats doesn’t deliver on disembarkation day, and The Points Guy says Norwegian doesn’t serve breakfast room service that morning either. Plan on the buffet or dining room.

Can room service deliver to the pool deck?

On some lines. Virgin delivers ShipEats to cabins and onboard cabanas. The Points Guy says Carnival will deliver anywhere on the ship through its Hub app for a $5 service charge. Princess’s OceanNow app delivers around the ship for its $14.99 per-person voyage fee, though The Points Guy says the $5 delivery fee is added too.
